2025-11-02

Pastor Hedley Clemo

Luke 11:1-13

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

This message looks at the Lord's Prayer in Luke chapter 11 and especially zooms in on the priority of prayer in regard to being unashamed askers. Those who will long persevere in asking God for things, those who will be shameless, bold and confident. The message has three phases: 1. The Pattern (the Lord's prayer is a model prayer) 2. The Priority (persistence in praying - the friend at midnight parable) 3. The Promise (how much more does God give good things to his children)

Being a Mary in a Martha world

2025-10-12

Pastor Hedley Clemo

Luke 10:38-42; Psalms 27:4; Philippians 3:10-13

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

This message is about priority - that which comes prior, that which must be before all other things - it is that 'One Thing'. Both Mary and Martha appear to have been followers, lovers of Jesus - but they are different. Martha is swept along with the busyness of life while Mary has learned to daily sit at Jesus' feet and sit under the authority of His holy word. Many good things of this life are those things that serve as DISTRACTIONS that slowly but surely take us away from that which MUST be 'prior' - the best thing, the chief thing, the one …

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

Luke 9v51 tells us that from this point on Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem (and his death, of course). He shows us here is these 2 very brief episodes that there are 2 balancing things need to truly follow him in discipleship: 1. Mercy 2. Commitment which entails a) hardship, b) urgency and c) focus (no looking back)

Pastor Hedley Clemo

Matthew 18:1-9; Luke 9:46-50; Mark 9:33-50

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

This message digs out (mainly from Mark 9v33-50) what true greatness is according to Jesus. 1. What true greatness is: Being last of all and being servant of all, being truly humble 2. What true greatness is not: Having a 'competitive spirit', having a 'party spirit' (being cliquey) and having a 'sin-soft, saltless spirit'

Luke 9:37-45; Mark 9:14-23; Matthew 17:14-23

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

As Jesus comes down from His mountaintop experience, He comes down into the valley of our tears and misery. What we see is that He comes to tackle the problems of FAILURE and also of FAITH by way of giving His tender helping hand. 1. Failure - Learning to deal with it 2, Faith - Learning to reckon on it

The transfiguration - Glory and suffering married together

2025-08-24

Pastor Hedley Clemo

Luke 9:28-36; Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:1-12

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

In this discipleship lesson we encounter an UNFORGETTABLE event. It is a mountaintop experience that is to LOOM LARGE in the apostles mind. This is a passage that is directly linked to the previous events where Jesus told them that he must suffer, must die and they must follow suit. In this event Jesus shows His full glory and marries together suffering and glory that belong and must be kept together if the disciples are to be able to practically cope with suffering.

Pastor Hedley Clemo

Luke 9:22-27; Matthew 16:13-28; Mark 8:27-38

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

In this message we consider a key turning point in the gospels where Jesus, after Peter's confession that He is the Christ, begins to now tell them that he MUST suffer and MUST be killed and that they MUST deny themselves and follow Him. Here we look at: 1) The Headline - that Jesus is the Christ 2) The Storyline - of Jesus suffering and taking up the cross along with our storyline to be the same 3) The Bottomline - where Jesus gives us 4 things that show what is at stake if we do or don't follow Jesus' storyline

Pastor Hedley Clemo

Luke 9:18-21; Matthew 16:13-28; Mark 8:22-30

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

In this message we consider 2 miracles (only the 2nd one in Luke 9) which come one after the other in Mark chapter 8. They are both about BLINDNESS. The first is a physically blind man that Jesus chooses to heal in 2 touches and not one. This is a miracle and an acted parable to show that people come to true saving faith by multiple touches of God.

The lesson of the loaves - My deficiency, His sufficiency

Pastor Hedley Clemo

Luke 9:10-17; Matthew 14:11-36; Mark 6:30-56; John 6:1-24

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people

The feeding of the 5,000 miracle is in all four gospels - which certainly says something. It is twinned with the miracle of Jesus walking on the water because it says the disciples had not learned the lesson of the loaves. This lesson is to do with learning our limits, facing up to failure and recognising the complete sufficiency of Jesus. The second miracle story helps to interpret the meaning of the first miracle story.

Luke 9:1-11; Matthew 10:1-23; Mark 6:8-11

Luke 9 brings in a new focus on discipleship, on taking the next stage in our discipleship journey. He sends them out two by two and they preach the Kingdom of God and heal people. When this is done they do a full debrief and Jesus no doubt critiques their approach and encourages them forward as they gain practical experience in ministry.

He now challenges another sinner - Simon the Pharisee to see his own sins and the lack of his love because he has been forgiven little.
