Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
Luke 9v51 tells us that from this point on Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem (and his death, of course). He shows us here is these 2 very brief episodes that there are 2 balancing things need to truly follow him in discipleship: 1. Mercy 2. Commitment which entails a) hardship, b) urgency and c) focus (no looking back)

Matthew 18:1-9; Luke 9:46-50; Mark 9:33-50
Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
This message digs out (mainly from Mark 9v33-50) what true greatness is according to Jesus. 1. What true greatness is: Being last of all and being servant of all, being truly humble 2. What true greatness is not: Having a 'competitive spirit', having a 'party spirit' (being cliquey) and having a 'sin-soft, saltless spirit'

Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
As Jesus comes down from His mountaintop experience, He comes down into the valley of our tears and misery. What we see is that He comes to tackle the problems of FAILURE and also of FAITH by way of giving His tender helping hand. 1. Failure - Learning to deal with it 2, Faith - Learning to reckon on it

Luke 9:28-36; Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:1-12
Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
In this discipleship lesson we encounter an UNFORGETTABLE event. It is a mountaintop experience that is to LOOM LARGE in the apostles mind. This is a passage that is directly linked to the previous events where Jesus told them that he must suffer, must die and they must follow suit. In this event Jesus shows His full glory and marries together suffering and glory that belong and must be kept together if the disciples are to be able to practically cope with suffering.

Luke 9:22-27; Matthew 16:13-28; Mark 8:27-38
Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
In this message we consider a key turning point in the gospels where Jesus, after Peter's confession that He is the Christ, begins to now tell them that he MUST suffer and MUST be killed and that they MUST deny themselves and follow Him. Here we look at: 1) The Headline - that Jesus is the Christ 2) The Storyline - of Jesus suffering and taking up the cross along with our storyline to be the same 3) The Bottomline - where Jesus gives us 4 things that show what is at stake if we do or don't follow Jesus' storyline

Luke 9:18-21; Matthew 16:13-28; Mark 8:22-30
Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
In this message we consider 2 miracles (only the 2nd one in Luke 9) which come one after the other in Mark chapter 8. They are both about BLINDNESS. The first is a physically blind man that Jesus chooses to heal in 2 touches and not one. This is a miracle and an acted parable to show that people come to true saving faith by multiple touches of God.

The lesson of the loaves - My deficiency, His sufficiency

Pastor Hedley Clemo
Luke 9:10-17; Matthew 14:11-36; Mark 6:30-56; John 6:1-24
Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
The feeding of the 5,000 miracle is in all four gospels - which certainly says something. It is twinned with the miracle of Jesus walking on the water because it says the disciples had not learned the lesson of the loaves. This lesson is to do with learning our limits, facing up to failure and recognising the complete sufficiency of Jesus. The second miracle story helps to interpret the meaning of the first miracle story.

Luke 9:1-11; Matthew 10:1-23; Mark 6:8-11
Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
Luke 9 brings in a new focus on discipleship, on taking the next stage in our discipleship journey. He sends them out two by two and they preach the Kingdom of God and heal people. When this is done they do a full debrief and Jesus no doubt critiques their approach and encourages them forward as they gain practical experience in ministry.

Pastor Hedley Clemo
Luke 8:40-56; Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:22-43
Luke's Gospel - Good news for all people
This episode is a story within a story - a miracle squared (What in Mark is known as intercalation or a Markan Sandwich). 1. The unnamed woman with a flow of blood and is healed with must a touch and given the title Daughter by Jesus - her faith in Jesus saves her soul. 2. Jairus 12 year old only daughter is brought back from death, again, by just the merest touch and the gentlest of words 'Talitha Koum'.

This message is about the seismic storm on the sea of Galilee and how Jesus reveals himself as BOTH Master and Commander in His life. he is one who masters and is not mastered by the event and also that he is commander in the sense that he displays his divine side in commanding the wind and the waves.
